RHB Group founder Abdul Rashid appointed Tabung Haji chairman with immediate effect

PUTRAJAYA: Former banker and prominent businessman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain has been appointed as Tabung Haji (TH) chairman.

Announcing the appointment, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar said Abdul Rashid’s appointment is effective Wednesday (Dec 20).

He replaces Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar, who held TH’s chairmanship position for two years beginning Dec 20, 2021.

“Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Hussain’s vast experience as a corporate figure will be valuable in continuing TH’s excellence as a world-class institution in managing haj.

“Further, he will be able to assist in spearheading efforts to strengthen the organisation,” said Mohd Na’im in a statement on Wednesday (Dec 20).

Abdul Rashid, 77, is the founder of RHB Group.

He had also served as a chairman of Khazanah Nasional Bhd’s executive committee between 1994 and 1998.

He was also the chairman of Putrajaya Holdings from 1995 to 2000.

Mohd Na’im said Abdul Rashid was also among the six individuals appointed to the Royal Commission of Inquiry by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to investigate TH’s management and operational issues from 2014 and 2020.

“The report has been presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the government,” he said, without elaborating further.

On Jan 20 last year, the government had obtained the King’s consent to set up the RCI, and the commission was given six months to carry out an investigation and prepare a report.

Mohd Na’im also expressed appreciation to Azman for his service during his tenure as chairman and for leading TH.
