PM will continue to be a Malay, no need to amend Constitution, says Anwar

BANGI: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says that the prime minister will continue to be a Malay.

"Either from the government or the opposition bloc, the candidate will be Malay.

"So, let's move forward, safeguard the rights of the people and protect the interests of all citizens, all ethnicities, and all regions," the Prime Minister told reporters after prayers at the Al-Kauthar Mosque, Bandar Baru Bangi here on Friday (Dec 15).

On Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal's call to amend the Federal Constitution so only a Malay can become prime minister, Anwar said there was no need for this.

"So far, there's no need, no serious discussion," he said.

Wan Ahmad made the call after DAP veteran Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang wrote a blog entry on Nov 30 saying that the Constitution provides that a non-Malay can be a prime minister.

Meanwhile, Anwar reminded the Opposition not to play up issues that could create racial disharmony and disputes.

"Of course, the Federal Constitution has rules. This is not an issue and it has never been an issue, so let's not complicate things.

"And the same goes for the redelineation raised by the Opposition. It's a non-issue. They just want to create a dispute, make people more upset," he said.

Anwar said the Opposition should focus on finding ways to strengthen the country's economy and alleviate the burden on the people instead. – Bernama
