GEORGE TOWN: The Penang state government has taken several measures to reduce the risk and impact of flash floods in the Teluk Bahang area, the state assembly was told on Thursday (Nov 23).
State infrastructure, transport and digital development committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the state government through the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) in its short-term plan has conducted regular river maintenance every year and minor repair works in Teluk Bahang through state management allocations.
"For the long-term plan, the Public Works Department has successfully completed the construction of a new bridge to replace the box culvert on Hassan Abas Road, Teluk Bahang, on Oct 25 this year.
"This new bridge construction directly mitigated the flood risk in the apartment area near the road," he said in reply to a question from Muhamad Kasim (PN-Teluk Bahang).
Zairil said a flood mitigation plan for Teluk Bahang/Sungai Pinang will also be implemented to reduce flood risks in the Teluk Bahang and Sungai Pinang hotspot areas.
He said these projects are currently in the design study phase.
He added that the state government will coordinate with various agencies including the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), the state Road Works Department, DID and the Southwest District Land and District Office in addressing flood risks and tackling drainage system issues in villages and small roads.
