Malaysian filmmaker Chong Keat Aun’s (pic) latest film Snow in Midsummer, which has been nominated in nine categories of the Golden Horse Awards, hit the big screens in Taiwan with all its scenes intact, reported China Press.

“Officially being shown in Taiwan cinemas. Not even a single cut!” Chong wrote on his Facebook account.

The film recounts the aftermath of the May 13 racial riots in Malaysia and Chong had earlier expressed concern as to whether it would pass the close scrutiny of the Malaysian Film Censorship Board, adding that they would try their best to get the movie approved.

The film is nominated at next month’s Golden Horse Awards in Taipei – often touted as the Academy Awards of the East – for best director, best feature film, best screenplay, best supporting actress, best cinematography, best makeup and costume, best original soundtrack, best original film song and best sound effects.

When the film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival recently, audiences were moved to tears by it.

In 2020, Chong won a Golden Horse for best director for his debut feature film The Story of Southern Islet, which revolves around a woman’s quest to find a cure for her husband thought to have been cursed by black magic.

> A man in his 90s in Jiangxi, China, was jailed for burning down his ex-girlfriend’s house after she refused to reconcile with him, China Press also reported.

The province’s higher people’s court sentenced the nonagenarian to three years’ jail for arson.

According to the court’s WeChat account, the man, known only as Ah Fa, had started a relationship with Ah Xiang in 2017, but they broke up due to arguments about their relationship and finances. Ah Fa later visited Ah Xiang’s house multiple times but was always refused entry.

On Nov 21 last year, when he was rejected yet again, Ah Fa used a lighter to set alight pieces of cardboard he found by Ah Xiang’s house. He then threw the burning cardboard through the window, which soon caused the whole house to be engulfed in flames.

Thankfully, the occupants managed to rush out in time before the house was razed.
