KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia must start preparing itself for any eventuality in light of the recent escalation in Gaza and Syria, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said.
The former Foreign Minister said Malaysia is not spared from being exposed to risks of military escalation given that the Asean region has experienced terrorism in the past.
“This crisis has the potential to spread throughout the region and the world. While we are discussing this, the United States military and warships are ready there, Chinese ships are also ready in the region, a new battle line has opened in the north with Hezbollah, attacks in Syria, missiles from the Houthis, (and) the IDF (Israel Defence Force) is becoming more aggressive in the West Bank.
“Don't forget that our region is also exposed to this risk; there are terrorist cells in the South of the Philippines, South of Thailand, Indonesia, even we in Malaysia are no exception.
“Security and intelligence must be tightened and this development must be closely monitored. We need a stronger sense of urgency and immediately make preparations and this is where the Home Minister and Defense Minister must be prepared.
“My only interest in voicing all this is the safety of our people and our own country. It is not to create fear, but for Malaysia to be more prepared, more forward and more guided in facing today's challenges,” he said when debating the Budget 2024 in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Oct 26).
Meanwhile, the Barisan Nasional’s Sembrong MP claimed that the government is not focused on handling economic matters in regards to foreign direct investment (FDI).
He said ministers should not only be seen as making statements and holding press conferences but those responses must be followed by effective actions.
“Hundreds of billions in FDI were announced, numerous memorandums of understanding have been signed with various countries but what follow-up action has been taken?”
“Action must not only be taken, but must also be seen and felt to being taken.
