Let students focus on learning, no need for Palestine Solidarity Week in schools, MP tells Dewan Rakyat

KUALA LUMPUR: There is no need to involve students in the Palestine Solidarity Week schools as they should focus on their education instead, says Datuk Willie Mongin.

The Puncak Borneo MP said while he personally believed that there is no problem in showing solidarity against atrocities and war crimes, he questioned the need for students to be involved.

"What is the need for us to bring the matter to schools and involve children who should focus on their own future?

"I uphold universal peace, and I believe all the MPs here want peace," Mongin said while interjecting during Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham's (PH-Beruas) debate of the Supply Bill 2024 on Thursday (Oct 26).

Mongin said that the move by the Education Ministry did not show good governance, as it should focus on building unity and national development.

"We keep moving backwards. This is not the way," he stressed.

Meanwhile, Ngeh said that the Palestinian issue was complex, and even adults found it hard to understand fully.

"For me personally, it should not be brought to school where students probably do not understand the issues.

"I am concerned that if any parties try to instil hatred among our youth. We should be teaching them to inculcate love for one another," said Ngeh.

The Education Ministry has instructed for the solidarity week to be held from Oct 29 to Nov 3, with six proposed activities for all schools.
