IPOH: Proposals for an annual and one-time salary increment for police officers have been submitted to the government, says Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.

The Inspector-General of Police said the suggestions made included adopting the minimum wage for lower-ranking officers and also a 30% annual salary increment.

He said the proposals were measures to address the cost of living faced by members of the force.

“A new police constable can only get RM1,441. The minimum wage of RM1,500 should also be applied to the police,” he said in a press conference after launching the Bukit Aman Wildlife Crime Bureau and Intelligence and Special Investigations (WCB/PSK) at the General Operations Force (GOF) base in Ulu Kinta here yesterday.

“We also proposed a 30% annual salary increment and a one-off increment for the management group, senior officers, the executives and lower rank officers,” he said.

As for the Cost-Of-Living Adjustment (Cola), Razarudin said he had proposed to the government for police officers and normal rank-and-file in urban areas to get RM300.

“Officers and normal personnel in suburban areas should get RM200 and RM250, respectively, while those in rural areas, RM100 and RM150, respectively,” he added.

On the WCB/PSK, Razarudin said it was a commitment by the police to tackle illegal wildlife trade and environmental crime.

He said the new bureau showed the need for transformation by the enforcement agency to combat the crime and to adapt to the times.

“The formation of the bureau is apt and timely.

“Our strategy is towards protecting and conservation of the Malayan tiger as poachers are highly interested in the valuable animal.

“Aside from conservation of Malayan tigers, other focuses include natural treasures and heritage from the land, sky and sea.

“We are also moving towards illegal logging and mining – our natural resources,” he added.
