WARSAW, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Five people were killed and about a dozen injured in a shooting in Krakow's Main Market Square on Saturday, Polish police said on X.

The perpetrator was shot by police officers and was being taken to hospital, police said, adding that emergency services were still working at the scene.

Polish news website Onet, citing sources in the leadership of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration, reported that two police officers and 15 civilians were injured.

Seven injured people were being treated at University Hospital, with six in stable condition.

A representative of the regional police told broadcaster TVN24 that the gunman was wearing military clothing and using a military-type long gun. He was detained at the intersection of Dietla and Stradom streets. A large quantity of additional firearms and ammunition was seized from his car.

Citing unofficial police information, Onet reported that the gunman fired at random people while driving, without selecting specific targets. Officers pursued him and exchanged gunfire with him. The same report cited unofficial police information as indicating that he acted alone.
