‘Heed Ruler’s decree to quit politicking’

PETALING JAYA: Take heed of Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s decree and start serving the people, say moderation activists.

Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said politicians, regardless of whether they are in government or Opposition, should abide by the Selangor Ruler’s decree to stop politicking.

He said the government, which often points fingers at the Opposition for politicising issues, should also stop doing the same.

“It applies both ways. Politicians may say they can stop politicking, but what is important is their actions,” he said when contacted.

Lee said the Sultan has shown concern for his citizens by calling for politicians to swiftly take action to serve the people.

“There are many problems in Selangor. Flooding is one of them.

“Now that the elections are over, everyone should focus on serving the people and finding solutions that benefit the state and the people,” he added.

In His Royal Highness’ decree yesterday, Sultan Sharafuddin called on the new Selangor state government to immediately address all the concerns of the people, especially those related to infrastructure and development like floods that frequently hit the state.

The Ruler also hopes that the assemblymen will do an excellent job by visiting the sites of the proposed and ongoing developments to assess their status.

His Royal Highness said it was his hope to see Selangor rise again and develop in every way, with people of different races living in peace, harmony, comfort and lasting prosperity.

The Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) founding director, Cynthia Gabriel, said politicking and using race and religion to win votes have gone past the threshold.

“We must now focus on rebuilding the economy and building this nation together.

“We need to provide jobs and put food on the table to show the government can function confidently and attract investments into the country,” she said.

National Patriots Association president Brig Jen Datuk Mohamed Arshad Raji said the state Ruler’s decree was very timely given how politicking in the country had reached levels it had never hit before.

“Politicking is something that can break the country apart. The people are not happy with the statements some are making and are getting afraid.”
