New songkok rules at Penang state assembly swearing-in ceremony will be discussed thoroughly, says CM

GEORGE TOWN: The new songkok rules during the state executive councillors swearing-in ceremony at Dewan Sri Pinang will be discussed thoroughly by the state government, said Chow Kon Yeow.

"Regarding this matter, the protocol department and the State Assembly understand that there are no such rules before this.

"We were informed even though there are conditions placed in the invitation and usually this condition is never placed, so there are parties who do not take notice of these rules," said the chief minister

Chow said he is also aware that the state protocol has excluded invitees from overseas from the rules.

He said he had instructed the state secretary Datuk Mohd Sayuthi Bakar to discuss with the state Governor's office on the rules further.

"Let the state secretary discuss it first with the governor's office as the rules came from the latter office," he said.

Chow was responding to a news portal that reported about the new rules which left many male attendees baffled with the new rules.

On Wednesday (Aug 16), male attendees of the ceremony were left frustrated after being told to wear songkok before they could enter the ceremony hall in Dewan Sri Pinang.

The new rules had left many of the male invitees surprised as there were no such rules in similar state ceremonies in the past.
