47,728 in police force to cast their ballots

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 47,728 police personnel and officers along with their spouses are slated to cast their votes at 260 voting centres consisting of 377 voting streams during early voting today.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said there is no excuse for anyone in the police force not to fulfil their civic duty.

“Voting is a right bestowed on all of us. It is a manifestation to the rakyat that the Royal Malaysian Police Force (PDRM) embraces the democratic process of voting,” he said in a video message yesterday.

“I also take this opportunity to wish all the best to all police personnel and officers who have and will be on duty throughout the state elections.

“To police personnel and officers deployed (for the elections), carry out your duties with utmost dedication and maintain a high level of professionalism. Control your emotions against any form of provocation,” he said.

According to the Election Commission (EC) website, early voting in the six state elections will also involve 49,660 Malaysian Armed Forces personnel and their spouses, reported Bernama.

The early voting will also involve the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election following the decision of the Terengganu Election Court on June 27 to annul the victory of PAS candidate Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim in the 15th General Election after finding that corruption had taken place.

The EC said the latest electoral roll that has been updated up to June 21 will be used for the Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Penang, Selangor and Negri Sembilan state elections and the Kuala Terengganu by-election.

Meanwhile, Kuala Terengganu by-election early voters will involve 1,362 policemen and 35 military personnel along with their spouses and four early polling centres will be opened at the Kuala Terengganu police contingent headquarters.

All the early polling centres for the six state elections and the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election will open simultaneously at 8am and will close in stages according to their locations.

In Kuala Terengganu, the polling centres for the Batu Buruk state constituency will be the first to close at noon, followed by Bandar state constituency at 2pm and finally, Ladang state constituency at 5pm. There are no early polling centres for the Waqaf Mempelam state constituency.

The EC has set Aug 12 as the polling date for the state elections and the Kuala Terengganu by-election, with early voting on Aug 8.

The elections in the six states involve 36 state constituencies in Kedah; Kelantan (45); Terengganu (32); Penang (40); Selangor (56); and 36 in Negri Sembilan.

The campaigning period is set for 14 days starting from nomination day on July 29 and will run until 11.59pm this Friday.
