PUTRAJAYA: There is nothing controversial about Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani stepping down early as the Inspector-General of Police, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
“As far as I am concerned, there is nothing controversial about it,” he said.
Acryl Sani took the mantle of the country’s top cop from Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador in June 2021 and was supposed to end his tenure as IGP in October, but chose to retire earlier.
The handover-of-duties and “beating of retreat” ceremonies planned for him were held on Thursday (June 22).
Tan Sri Razarudin Hussain is taking over the IGP's post, while Comm Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay is the new Deputy IGP.
Their appointments have received the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in accordance with Clause 4 and 5 of the Article 140 of the Federal Constitution, following advice from the Prime Minister based on the recommendation of the Police Force Commission.
On his working relationship with Acryl Sani, Saifuddin said he was comfortable working with him in managing issues related to peace and public order.
He also addressed talk that Ayob Khan had “overtaken” cops who are more senior than him in assuming the Deputy IGP's post, pointing out that there are 25 police officers who hold the Commissioner of Police title or position.
Saifuddin said that they included department directors as well as several state police chiefs.
“All the CPs are eligible to hold the post of IGP and Deputy IGP,” he said.
