New attraction for Melaka

MELAKA: A new attraction known as “Klebang Walk” at Dataran 1Malaysia here will showcase leisure and cultural attractions, says Klebang assemblyman Datuk Lim Ban Hong.

He said the site is close to the beachfront, which means that it has the potential to be a good sightseeing spot.

“Hence, we will feature, among others, a night market at the location, so that it can become a tourism attraction for the state,” he said when contacted.

Lim said the site would be developed in stages.

The initial part of the plan would be completed ahead of Visit Melaka Year 2024, he added.

He said the work progress would be monitored so that the project would take shape accordingly to the wishes of the locals and state government.

Earlier, Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) mayor Datuk Shadan Othman said the site would be made as a focal point for tourism.

The redevelopment works, he said, would involve the restructuring of traders’ sites in the area.

Shadan said efforts would be made to rearrange the operations of food truck, besides improving the lighting and road system.

“The area around Dataran 1Malaysia is not only a focus of visitors but also food truck operators as well as food and drink stalls,” he explained.

Shadan expressed his disappointment over what he felt was a lackadaisical attitude of traders and hawkers towards cleanliness at the site.

He said such an attitude could lead to the place losing its shine as a tourist attraction.

The MBMB, he said, would implement stringent conditions on the business community at the site after the facelift had been completed.

This was to ensure a conducive environment for all, he added.
