Victims of Sibu freak storm may register for financial aid up to April 14

SIBU: The division-level disaster management committee here is still compiling the number of victims affected by the freak storm on Wednesday (April 5), with several hundred homeowners believed to be involved.

The damage ranged from house roofs blown off to car porch ceilings collapsing, while canopies at the Ramadan bazaar here were also damaged.

"Our rough estimate is a few hundred (victims) in the Sibu and Lanang constituencies," Sibu MP Oscar Ling (pic) said at the registration of victims for financial aid here on Monday (April 10).

The five-day registration ends on Friday (April 14).

Ling said the quantum of aid depends on the level of damage sustained. For example, those whose house roofs were blown off will receive up to RM1,000, he added.

The aid will be disbursed within two days of the registration exercise.

"This is part of my service centre's contribution to the victims. I understand that the disaster management committee will also be helping," he added.

Ling said the financial aid from his service centre was extended to voters in the constituency, and advised those from Lanang to register at its MP Alice Lau's service centre in Jalan Aman.

A ferocious thunderstorm on Wednesday evening caused major damage in town.

Scenes of uprooted trees and dangling roofs on power and telecommunication wires terrified locals, who said they had never experienced anything like this before.
