BANGI: University students can now enjoy Menu Siswa Rahmah for as low as RM3.50.

The menu was introduced at Kafeteria Randau Rasa in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) on Thursday (March 16) and was presented to Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

The Higher Education Minister said the ministry had the support of all 20 public universities, 24 polytechnics and eight community colleges for the initiative, with 236 vendors involved to boost the menus in varsities and 98 vendors for the other institutions.

"We were able to get the RM3.50 price because the university management has absorbed the rental fees for vendors," said Mohamed Khaled when asked how it differed from the normal Menu Rahmah, which offered RM5 meals.

He also stressed that the menu was strictly for B40 students and that standard operating procedures were already in place by university managements to target eligible students by giving out tokens.

"This menu is expected to benefit 320,000 B40 students that we have identified across all varsities and polytechnics," he added.

On a separate issue, Mohamed Khaled shut down the recent remark made by Tan Sri Noh Omar that Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi could be removed by the party supreme council through a vote of no confidence if the motion received two-thirds support.

He said in a press conference that it was irrelevant because Noh Omar had already been fired.

He also said university students were allowed to be involved in politics and that the ministry was not planning to raise tuition fees for tertiary students.
