KUALA LUMPUR: Umno leaders at all levels must ensure the party’s political fortunes continue on an upward trajectory, says Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.

The Umno veteran said politics moved in cycles, with the party having experienced periods when it was highly regarded and supported, as well as times when it was ridiculed, attacked and slandered.

“There are times when we rise and there are times when we fall. When we rise, we are held in high regard, praised and supported.

“But when we fall, as happened in previous years, we are ridiculed, attacked and subjected to slander,” he told reporters after Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s policy speech at the Umno General Assembly on Friday (Sept 11).

Hishammuddin said those experiences should serve as lessons and strengthen the party, adding that the political cycle now appeared to be turning upwards for Umno and Barisan Nasional.

“It is now up to the party’s leaders to ensure that the cycle for Umno and Barisan Nasional continues in an upward direction,” he said.

He said leaders at every level must shoulder that responsibility with honesty, courage, consistency and perseverance.
