'Opposition' not appropriate term for assemblymen not in ruling party, says Johor Ruler

Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar speaking when opening the state assembly building at Kota Iskandar in Iskandar Puteri on March 16, 2023.

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The term "Opposition" is seen as unsuitable to describe assemblymen who are not in the ruling party, says Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar.

Instead of calling them "pihak pembangkang", the Johor Ruler suggested that they be known as "pihak pengimbang."

He said this was because the Opposition’s role is more than just to oppose all of the government’s suggestions.

"These assemblymen play the role of check and balance to ensure the government does not do as they please.

"However, refrain from seeking revenge or nitpicking the government.

"I also have no issues with the pihak pengimbang - they can seek an audience with me and give their ideas or views," he said when opening the 15th Johor state assembly sitting at Kota Iskandar here on Thursday (March 16).

His Majesty added that he wants the stable political situation to continue for the benefit of the people and state.

"It has been a year since the state assemblymen were elected and I am satisfied by their behaviour and roles.

"I hope there will be no more returning to their old and unsavoury ways," he reminded.

"I have also been monitoring the progress of the Mentri Besar and state exco members, which I found to be doing well.

"Though there are those who lack experience, they have worked hard to prove their potential.

"They can come to me or the state’s administrative officers if they have any questions," he added.

On a separate matter, the Sultan wanted the state government to manage its finances well and be mindful of its spending.

He congratulated the state government for obtaining a surplus after recording a deficit in the year before.

"Although the surplus is not a lot, it is better than spending more than the revenue collected.

"Every department must spend wisely and all procurements should be done in the manner that is transparent, efficient and value for money," he added.
