Penang cops arrest two alleged triad members for extorting trader

GEORGE TOWN: Police have arrested two men in their 20’s for allegedly extorting a trader on Jalan Kebun Bunga here on Friday (Feb 3).

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said the suspects were arrested at about 4am after a report was lodged by the victim, who reported that the two men threatened to damage his stall.

He said that initial investigations found that both men have triad-linked tattoos, adding that the two were also drunk at the time.

ACP Soffian then said the suspects have been remanded until Feb 7 and the case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code and Section 43 of the Societies Act.

On another issue, he said that police have opened four investigation papers on a theft case involving four victims during the Thaipusam festival.

He said a 75-year-old foreign national lost RM6,000 after he was pickpocketed while watching the chariot procession at Lebuh Chulia on Saturday (Feb 4).

"The man only realised that he lost his wallet at about 9am on Sunday (Feb 5) and decided to lodge a police report then," he said.

ACP Soffian said police received three other reports from victims aged between 37 to 58 involving similar offences.

He said the cases are being investigated under Section 397 of the Penal Code.
