Overcome hate, prejudice, urges PM Anwar in Wesak Day message

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians should allow values such as love, compassion and moderation to overcome hatred and prejudice, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar said the values celebrated during Wesak carried special significance in a multicultural nation where certain groups continued to stoke hostility between races and religions.

“I believe the spread of love and compassion will drown out incitements of hatred, clear away prejudice and strengthen mutual respect and understanding, which are the foundations of national harmony and unity.

“Wesak Day is an occasion to reflect on noble values such as wisdom, moderation, compassion and love for fellow human beings, which are not only celebrated within religious traditions but remain relevant in building a society that understands and respects one another,” he said in a Facebook post on Sunday (May 31).

Anwar also wished Buddhists peace, well-being and happiness as they celebrate Wesak Day.

He said the occasion should continue to foster humanitarian values that unite Malaysians as a civilised and dignified nation.
