PM: Govt to appoint commissioner for children


PUTRAJAYA: A commissioner for children will be appointed to look into issues and the wellbeing of youngsters, says the Prime Minister.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the commissioner will be an autonomous part of the Human Rights Commission.

"The Cabinet has decided on this and the appointment will be done soon," he said after chairing the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday (Jan 18).

On the appointment, the Prime Minister said some names have been identified and an announcement would be made in due time.

He said the commissioner would be tasked to look into matters of abandonment, abuse, social issues and other problems involving children.

The Prime Minister also said that his deputy Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi would chair a committee looking into social issues.
