Asyraf Wajdi not defending Umno Youth chief post

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki will not be defending his post in the upcoming party polls.

In his closing speech at the party general assembly, he apologised to the delegates for all his shortcomings or any failures when leading the youth wing.

"I have tried my best to ensure that we can stand up again and I have sacrificed everything for the party.

"Most importantly, we have to see how we can stand up again after what happened.

"That is why I have decided not to defend my position as the Umno Youth chief," he said in his speech on Thursday (Jan 12).

Asyraf Wajdi said that he made the decision to ensure that the party would become strong again, led by a new leadership with fresh ideas.

"There is one thing I would like to ask from all of you, we, the youth wing that has experienced hardship in our struggles.

"I always say that we are a unique generation, and we never compare ourselves with other generations.

"Nobody has gone through what we experienced, including being in the Opposition for 22 months, being in the coalition government, and being part of a government that is led by a prime minister from our own ranks, and also now in the unity government.

"This is a unique experience and God's plan. Most importantly, we need to be sincere and honest in our struggles," he added.
