Malaysians bid farewell to football legend Pele


KUALA LUMPUR: Tributes to football legend Pele have been pouring in from all over the world, as soon as news of his passing came in.

Fans, including those from Malaysia, have expressed heavy hearts and admiration for the Brazilian, who is widely regarded as the greatest of all time.

On Facebook, many expressed condolences and well-wishes to his family. The word “legend” was not missed in most comments.

User Melice Bunsu commented: “A great football legend. The greatest that Brazil ever produced. No other player in the world has scored more than 1,300 goals in their lifetime while playing for clubs or a country... May God bless you.”

Simon Kwok shared the same sentiment, saying: “The great Legend of the 60s/70s. Football treasure of Brazil. Global icon. His magic on the field is remembered in awe & fondness. His contribution to the beautiful game is immense. Pele his name rings loud."

Some, like Hazique Khairi Haziquek, chose to see the silver lining in Pele's death, pointing out that he would probably be playing football with other fallen legends in heaven.

“Now he joined other legendary players like (Diego) Maradona, (Johan) Cruyff, Carlos Alberto (Torres)... and many more playing football In heaven,” he said.

However, most users are simply filled with sorrow as they react to the news, wishing eternal peace for Pele.

"A legend and icon of football left the world to be with God. May his soul rest in eternal peace," P Aruna Salam said.

Meanwhile, on Twitter, user @ChanSemenyih retweeted The Star's own news of Pele's passing, saying that the contribution of the "greatest player ever of the century" to the world of sports will not be forgotten.

"Time to say goodbye with a heavy heart. May your soul rest in peace, sir," the user tweeted.

On Instagram, user imijd1367 quoted Pele's touching tribute after the death of Diego Maradona, another football legend, in which he said "I hope we will play soccer together in the sky."

Pele, the legendary Brazilian soccer player who rose from barefooted poverty to become one of the greatest and best-known athletes in modern history, died on Thursday (Dec 30) at the age of 82.

Sao Paulo's Albert Einstein hospital, where Pele was undergoing treatment, said he died at 3:27pm "due to multiple organ failures resulting from the progression of colon cancer associated with his previous medical condition."
