SUNGAI BULOH: Distraught family members and friends of the Batang Kali landslide victims can lean on the emphatic shoulders of volunteers to guide them through this traumatic period.
Tzu Chi Foundation Malaysia volunteer Tan Chee Wei said its volunteers were on standby at several locations to help victims’ families if needed.
"Many of the families are still holding on to hope, even though we know there have been several victims.
"Some families are too distraught and do not know what to do.
"We accompany the families and try to guide them through the process to hopefully make it easier," he said when met at the Sungai Buloh Hospital on Saturday (Dec 17).
He added that more than 50 Tzu Chi volunteers have been stationed at the Sungai Buloh, Kuala Kubu Baru and Selayang Hospitals as well as the Ulu Yam Baru police station since Friday (Dec 16).
Tan said about three to four victims’ families were currently at the hospital’s Forensic Department awaiting further information.
The death toll currently stood at 21. A total of 61 people had been rescued.
On Friday, the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry said it would provide counselling sessions for those traumatised by the deadly landslide which hit Father's Organic Farm campsite.
Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Aiman Athirah Sabu said they were also providing food, drinks and mats to help the victims who were brought to the Ulu Yam police station.
