PM choice should put nation ahead of personal interests, says GPS

KUCHING: As negotiations to form the Federal Government continue, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) now says it will leave it to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's discretion to appoint the prime minister.

The Sarawak Premier's Office said GPS felt strongly that the nation's interests should be prioritised over personal interests in order to form a stable government for the sake of the people and nation.

"GPS had proposed the formation of a Malaysian government from a pact comprising Perikatan Nasional, Barisan Nasional, GPS and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), which represents Malaysians of all races and religions," the office said in a statement on Tuesday (Nov 22).

In view of the political wrangling in Peninsular Malaysia, the statement added, GPS believed that the people's mandate must be respected.

"As such, GPS leaves it to the discretion of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, in accordance with his constitutional role, to appoint a prime minister who will lead a strong government to administer the nation," it said.

On Sunday (Nov 20), Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced that GPS would support a coalition with Perikatan, Barisan and GRS to form the new government.

However, no pacts have materialised as Barisan has not decided who to support.

The King extended the deadline for political parties to submit their choice of prime minister candidate to 2pm Tuesday.
