PETALING JAYA: Nov 19 is a special day for Lily Lee. Not only does she turn 60 today, but she will also be casting her vote for the first time after 39 years in her hometown of Batu 11, Cheras which comes under the Bangi constituency .
"The voting process was a nostalgic moment for me. My sisters and I came in separate cars. I also met up with my childhood friends, some whom I have not met since I got married and shifted to Kuala Lumpur to work," said Lee.
Among Lee's childhood friends who had come to cast their votes at SJKC Batu 11, Cheras, were Barisan-MCA candidate Datuk Hoh Hee Lee, who is contesting for the Bangi seat.
Lee remembers playing slipper throwing and rubber band shooting games with Hoh.
Lee, who moved back to Batu 11 to retire, said she initally wanted a grand celebration for her 60th birthday but changed her mind when she found out that the elections would also fall on the same day.
"I will still be celebrating but only with family members. We have booked a table at a Chinese restaurant. There will be longevity buns and noodles," said Lee.
Asked if Batu 11 would be too quiet compared to the bright lights of Kuala Lumpur, Lee said life will be anything but quiet as so many of her friends are also here.
"Since the borders reopened, my friends and I have been travelling a lot. We just came back from Italy and Greece. We are planning for more travel next year," said Lee.
On how the birthday girl will be spending the rest of her day, Lee said she will be taking her daughter to Taman Connaught where her voting centre is.
As for her birthday wish, Lee's dearest desire is to be healthy and happy.
"I also wish for peace. Most importantly, no matter which party wins, all must work together for the good of the rakyat and country," said Lee.
