AN octogenarian became an Internet sensation after completing the 2022 Beijing Marathon in six hours, 16 minutes and 51 seconds, reported Sin Chew Daily.
Zhang Shun, 86, won the admiration of many viewers and netizens on social media despite coming in last in the 42.195km event that began at Tiananmen Square.
One of the comments read: “This ‘ye ye’ (a respectable way of addressing an older male) is awesome!”
Another said: “Who is he? How could he be so good at this age?”
According to the daily, Zhang was among some 30,000 runners who took part in the marathon which was held after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
One of the participants, known only as Ah Ming, said Zhang was the oldest runner in the event and the last to cross the finish line.
Zhang was seen raising his hands in jubilation after completing the race.
Four years ago, he also caused a stir on social media after completing the Wuxi Marathon with a time of five hours and 42 minutes.
His time was even better than some of the younger runners.
