Malaysia's diplomatic efforts during Iran war should be given credit, says Anwar

JOHOR BARU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged critics to give credit to the government’s bold diplomatic moves, saying Malaysia’s firm stance on the Iran and Gaza conflicts has strengthened international ties and opened doors for Malaysian ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

He highlighted that Malaysia’s clear opposition to attacks by Israel and the United States on Iran has earned the country recognition on the global stage.

“Do you think it’s easy to persuade the Iranian President to allow our ships through the Strait of Hormuz? Look at how many countries have made statements as firm as Malaysia’s — we deserve some credit,” he said, while urging the Opposition not to undermine these efforts.

Anwar said this in his speech during Johor PKR convention held here on Sunday (April 5).

He also defended his past meetings with current and former US Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden, saying he had negotiated for Malaysia’s interests and raised concerns about the suffering of Palestinians under Israeli attacks.

“Yes, I negotiated, but I did not compromise the country’s interests. I spoke directly about the plight of Palestinian children and the ongoing occupation in Gaza,” he said.

The Prime Minister said Malaysia’s firm positions reflect the country’s reformist principles, portraying the nation as one of the few willing to take clear stances on global geopolitical issues.
