MUAR: Any effort to hold discussions with the Opposition to address the current global energy crisis must be carried out by the government sincerely and seriously, says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (pic).

The Perikatan Nasional deputy chairman said the government’s open approach to involving the Opposition in any task force was welcomed, but it must come with genuine commitment, Sinar Harian reported.

“We welcome it if the Prime Minister is open on this matter, but it cannot be just a token invite.

“We can sit down together and discuss it because this problem involves everyone and it is the people who will be affected,” he told the Malay language daily at a press conference during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house for the Pagoh parliamentary constituency at the Pagoh Youth and Sports Complex on Sunday (April 5).

On Saturday (April 4), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was reported to have said he was opening the door wide to the Opposition and any parties who wished to hold discussions to help the government find solutions to the global energy crisis.

Meanwhile, Muhyiddin, who is a former prime minister, rejected the appointment of Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Marican as chairman of the Crisis Management Task Force (PPPK) under the National Economic Action Council (MTEN) to co-ordinate the government’s efforts to address the global energy crisis following the conflict in the Middle East.

The Pagoh MP said the top post in such an important committee should be held by the Prime Minister.

“Matters like this — the most critical — should be led by the Prime Minister himself. This is not about the price of oil, but the grievances of the people who are under pressure, especially due to the rise in diesel prices,” he told Sinar Harian.
