Residents relieved over capture of two male elephants

GUA MUSANG: Over 500 residents and workers around Felda Aring 10 and 11 expressed their relief after the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) captured two male elephants that had been roaming the area for the past two years.

Resident Ainina Afiqah Mohamad Rotik, 29, said the elephants posed a safety threat and destroyed crops and property of those who lived in the area, adding that the elephants had emerged in the past three months, causing them to limit their movements at night.

"Previously, they had damaged car garages and entered the housing area. It's concerning as they go pass roads near houses. I feel reliefed and grateful that the two elephants have been caught," he said when met by reporters at Aring 10 here on Sunday (April 5).

Plantation worker Muhamad Haika Mohd Zali, 34, said the elephants had also entered the plantation area and destroyed young palm oil trees, causing losses.

"Wild elephants had entered the area before but had left, these two male elephants do frequent the area, especially the housing area," he said, adding that the two wild elephants were caught on April 1 following a report to the department. - Bernama
