Probe into election offences

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested a man in Kulim for burning down a tent at the Tapak Mahlus polling centre and removing the flags of a Barisan Nasional component party, says Bukit Aman’s general elections operations director Comm Datuk Hazani Ghazali.

“The man allegedly threw the flags into a drain there.

“He will be remanded to assist investigations into mischief by fire and for promoting feelings of ill-will and hostility.

“Meanwhile in Langkawi, a suspect was arrested for allegedly threatening to punch a man who was appointed the Pulau Tuba voting district centre chief.

“The suspect allegedly threatened to punch the complainant if he ever saw him outside during campaigning,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Comm Hazani added that this suspect would be remanded to help with further investigations into promoting feelings of ill-will and hostility, and criminal intimidation.

He said police have also opened investigations in Kerian, Perak over an allegedly libellous and malicious speech by Perikatan Nasional candidate Razman Zakaria against PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“We will investigate the case under improper use of network facilities and defamation,” he added.

Police have also opened investigations at Kemaman, Terengganu after a man found a banner hanging at the Chukai Toll Plaza junction that allegedly insulted Barisan’s Kemaman candidate.

“Investigations revealed the banner contained vulgar words,” he said, adding that investigations have been opened for intentional insult with intent to provoke.

Comm Hazani said a total of 72 ceramah were being investigated for allegedly being held without permits on Monday.

Separately, Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Amihizam Abdul Shukor said cops were looking for those responsible for vandalising several Barisan flags and posters in Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

He added that the Lembah Kiara Barisan branch youth chief had made a police report on Monday.

“The flags and posters were cut from their perches at Jalan Athinahpan and Jalan Burhanuddin Helmi,” he said.

ACP Amihizam said there was no closed-circuit television (CCTV) in the area where the crime was committed.

The police have classified the act as mischief.

He also advised campaign workers to refrain from committing any form of provocation.

“We hope politicians can prevent their supporters from committing unlawful acts.”
