GE15: Cops nab man in Kulim for vandalism at polling centre


KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested a man in Kulim for burning down a tent at the Tapak Mahlus polling centre and removing the flags of a Barisan Nasional component party.

Bukit Aman’s General Election operations director Comm Datuk Hazani Ghazali said the man was said to have thrown the flags into a drain.

"The suspect will be remanded to assist investigations for mischief by fire and for promoting feelings of ill will and hostility.

"Meanwhile in Langkawi, a suspect was arrested for allegedly threatening to punch a man who was appointed as the Pulau Tuba voting district centre chief.

"The suspect allegedly threatened to punch the complainant if he ever saw him outside during campaigning," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Nov 8).

He said the suspect would be remanded to help with investigations for promoting feelings of ill will and hostility and criminal intimidation.

Comm Hazani said police also began an investigation in Kerian, Perak over an allegedly slanderous and malicious speech by Perikatan Nasional candidate Razman Zakaria toward Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

"We will investigate the case for improper use of network facilities and defamation," he said.

He added that police also opened investigations in Kemaman, Terengganu over a banner hanging at the Chukai Toll Plaza junction which was insulting to the Barisan Nasional Kemaman candidate.

"The banner contained vulgar words," he said, adding that the matter is being probed for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace.

Comm Hazani said a total of 72 ceramah were under investigation for being held without permits on Monday (Nov 7).

"Negri Sembilan recorded the highest number of ceramah without permits at 21 followed by Kuala Lumpur (15), Perak (14) and Selangor (13), among others.

"Police have issued 997 permits to hold ceramah, with the highest number in Sabah (193), followed by Sarawak (144), Johor (125), Selangor (113), Perak (102), Kedah (68), Negri Sembilan (48), Melaka (46), Pahang (45), Kelantan (41), Terengganu (27), Penang (21), Kuala Lumpur (15) and Perlis (nine)," he said.
