BERA: The Election Commission (EC) will decide whether the general election process should proceed in the event that the country is hit by massive floods, says Prime Minister Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
He said the EC would call for meetings with related agencies to look for possible alternatives to proceeding with the election process in the event of floods.
“It is up to the EC to decide if it wants to stop the election.
“If major floods occur to the extent of preventing people from going out (to vote), then the EC will see if there are alternatives,” he said after attending a gathering with the Bandar Kemayan community.
The 14-day campaign period for GE15 began on Saturday following the conclusion of the nomination process.
MetMalaysia recently issued a forecast that the north-east monsoon season would begin on Nov 7 and last until March next year.
It said this would trigger rainfall sooner than previously predicted and would cause at least four to six periods of constant heavy rain during the five-month-long monsoon season.
This, it said, could result in flooding in low-lying and riverine areas.
The department also predicted that the king tide phenomenon could hit during several periods between November and January next year.
Ismail Sabri said that prior to the dissolution of Parliament on Oct 10, the Federal Government had made preparations to manage floods.
On his campaign plans, Ismail Sabri, who is defending his Bera seat, is adopting a casual and harmonious approach and will not be making personal attacks on his opponents.
He said the mindset of today’s voters, especially first-time voters, was different, and they were wiser and more mature in their decisions.
What was important, he said, was to focus on promoting “one’s products” rather than discrediting others.Ismail Sabri, who has held the seat since 2004, is being challenged by Abas Awang (Pakatan Harapan) and Datuk Asmawi Harun (Perikatan Nasional).
