GE15: Muda standing in Tanjung Piai does not sit well with Amanah

JOHOR BARU: Amanah is disappointed that the Tanjung Piai parliamentary seat has been handed to Muda and hopes the Pakatan Harapan top leadership will reconsider.

Its Johor chief Aminolhuda Hassan (pic) said history had repeated itself, as this was not the first time a seat was handed to the fledgling party.

“What we are seeing in Tanjung Piai is a repeat of what happened in the Johor election in March with the Puteri Wangsa state seat.

“During the early stages of seat negotiations for the 15th General Election (GE15), it was decided that Amanah was supposed to get six seats, DAP eight, PKR 11 and only one for Muda.

“The other Pakatan Harapan component parties with more seats compared to Amanah should be the ones giving their seats to Muda, not us,” he said in a statement on Monday (Oct 31).

He added that seat allocations should be distributed among the main Pakatan components before other parties are considered.

He also called on the Pakatan presidential council to review its decision.

On Oct 29, Muda named party co-founder Lim Wei Jiet as its candidate for Tanjung Piai, along with Danial Abd Majeed (Kepala Batas, Penang) and Siti Rahayu Baharin (Tanjong Karang, Selangor) for GE15.

In GE14, the late Datuk Dr Md Farid Md Rafik of Bersatu – then a Pakatan component – won in Tanjung Piai against MCA’s Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng and PAS’ Nordin Othman with a 524-vote majority.

In a by-election called after Md Farid passed away in 2019, Wee won the seat with a 15,086-vote majority.

For GE15, at least 10 seats previously contested by Bersatu have been distributed among Pakatan parties.

In the March state election, PKR grassroots members who had been working the ground in Puteri Wangsa since 2020, were upset that the state seat was ultimately given to the neophyte party.

Johor PKR women’s wing chief Napsiah Khamis reportedly said the party decided to allow Amanah to contest the Puteri Wangsa seat.

Amanah later gave the seat to Muda, with its then secretary-general Amira Aisya Abd Aziz winning in a six-cornered fight.
