ISKANDAR PUTERI: The Johor state assembly has rejected the forming of a special committee to study and provide recommendations about the anti-party hopping law.
The motion, brought by DAP’s Skudai assemblyman Marina Ibrahim, was rejected by the majority of the 56 lawmakers at the one-day state assembly sitting at Kota Iskandar here on Thursday (Sept 22).
The motion called for a committee to be formed to conduct research and provide recommendations regarding the anti-party hopping enactment at the state level following the Dewan Rakyat’s vote to pass the law on July 29.
The motion only received support from 13 Opposition lawmakers while 37 assemblymen from Barisan Nasional voted against the formation of the committee.
One each from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia and PAS abstained from voting.
State assembly Speaker Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi, who is also Rengit assemblyman, did not cast his vote.
Barisan’s Kukup and Parit Yaani assemblymen and Bersatu’s Bukit Kepong assemblymen did not attend the state assembly sitting.
The motion was earlier debated by Chiong Sen Sern (PH-Bukit Batu), Amira Aisya Abd Aziz (Muda-Puteri Wangsa), Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain (BN-Mahkota) and Anuar Abd Manap (BN-Pemanis).
