PETALING JAYA: The progress in the construction of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project is satisfactory and the cooperation between the parties in the project is strong, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

In a Facebook post after visiting a project site in Terengganu on Saturday (Sept 3), the Transport Minister said that he is pleased with the cooperation between the Malaysia Rail Link (MRL) and the, China Communications Construction Company Ltd (CCCC).

The CCCC is the Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (EPCC) contractor, while the MRL is the project owner.

“I am very happy and satisfied to see MRL as the owner of the ECRL project as well as CCCC, which is the EPCC contractor for this project, can work together well, especially in sharing skills and expertise that benefit local workers.

“I'm sure many can't wait to receive the economic spillover when the ECRL is completed in early 2027,” he added after a visit to the ECRL project site in Section 3 Serada, Terengganu.

He said the 360 meter long bridge construction site that crosses the Terengganu River at Pulau Manis, Serada, Kuala Terengganu is expected to be finishedin July next year.

“The total length of Bridge No. 60 is 5km, which is the longest bridge in the construction area of Section 3. This bridge uses two types of span - the Continuous Beam/Box Girder and the T-Beam,” said Dr Wee.

He added that the system being used will reduce the number of poles in the river to comply with the standards set by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), which is aimed at preserving the sustainability of the Terengganu River.

“There are 36 bridges that will be built for the entire Section,” said Dr Wee.

Also present during his visit were MRL chief executive officer Datuk Seri Darwis Abdul Razak and China Communications Construction (ECRL) Sdn Bhd deputy project director, Liu Jianming.

The ECRL is a 640km railway link connecting states in the east coast and west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, which aims to reduce land travel time between both regions.

Dr Wee in another post shared a photo of him and Darwis giving thumbs up to Sarah, a civil engineer who is part of the project.

The Terengganu-born who is currently seven months pregnant was praised for her dedication in fulfilling her task despite being heavily pregnant.

"Sarah told me that as long as she can, she will continue working until the end of October 2022 before going for maternity leave.

"Congratulations Sarah! You are a brave and committed engineer," he said, adding that the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia graduate can be a role model to all young engineers.
