44 GROs among 50 detained in Johor raid

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 44 foreign women working as Guest Relation Officers (GRO) charging up to RM1,500 for sex were among 50 people detained following a raid at an entertainment outlet in Taman Bukit Indah in Nusajaya, Johor.

The remaining individuals detained were three Malaysians, two Bangladeshi men and a Pakistani man.

Immigration Department director-general Datuk Seri Khairul Dzaimee Daud said 27 department officers were involved in the operation conducted at about 1am on Thursday (Aug 4).

"We inspected 150 people at the night club and detained 50 of them including 43 Thai women, and a female Laos national aged between 24 and 35 working as GROs," he said in a statement on Thursday.

The GROs were paid between RM200 and RM300 for their services to accompany the customers drinking, he said.

"However, the GROs charged between RM1,000 to RM1,500 for sex.

"Some of the women tried to escape during the raid but we managed to cordon off the area," he added.

The foreign women entered the country using social visit passes but they abused it, he said.

"We seized 50 foreign passports and those detained were brought to Setia Tropika Immigration office for further action," he said.

Khairul Dzaimee said the department will track down the remaining members of the syndicate and tighten security at the country's northern border.
