BUKIT MERTAJAM: A couple, believed to be part of a drug smuggling syndicate, were arrested after police found 300kg of ganja worth RM750,000 in their rented house in Taman Impian here.
Perlis police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Surina Saad said the 41-year-old man and his Indonesian girlfriend, 37, were detained during a raid conducted at about 9pm on July 16.
DCP Surina said that during the raid, police found the ganja in 20 polystyrene boxes which were hidden in the house.
“The suspects were in the house during the raid,” she told a press conference held at the central Seberang Prai police headquarters yesterday.
DCP Surina added that the ganja was believed to have been smuggled into Perlis from Thailand in a van.
“We trailed the van from Perlis until Penang.
“Perlis, Penang and Bukit Aman conducted an operation to raid the house in Bukit Mertajam,” she said.
She said checks found that the suspects were not married although they lived together in the rented house.
“Urine tests came back negative for drug abuse and both of them have no prior criminal and drug records.
“During the raid, police confiscated a motorcycle worth RM2,800,” she said.
She added that the drugs seized could have been used by 600,000 drug addicts.
DCP Surina also said the ganja seized were meant for distribution in the Klang Valley and that Penang was used as a transit point by the syndicate.
She noted that police were investigating when the syndicate started operating, adding that the suspects had been remanded for seven days until tomorrow.
She said to date, 364kg of ganja had been confiscated and 16 people arrested in Perlis since January this year.
“We will ensure that drug smuggling activities are stopped completely and that those responsible brought to justice,” DCP Surina added.
