Kedah Umno positive on PAS cooperation, says Mahdzir Khalid

PETALING JAYA: Kedah Umno and PAS could form a pact to face the upcoming 16th General Election (GE16), says Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.

The Kedah Umno chairman said he held a positive high tea session with Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor at his official residence on Tuesday (Sept 15), and further discussions about the collaboration at a higher level could occur in the future.

"I found the encounter to be very cordial and positive, resulting in an initial outlook pointing towards more serious discussions at a higher level in the future.

"Kedah Umno has gained insight into how negotiations between the two parties could be structured should they move forward together in GE16," he said on Facebook on Wednesday (Sept 16).

However, Mahdzir said seat allocations were not discussed, as it was still too early for such talks.

Also present during the informal session were state party secretary Datuk Ariffin Man, Alor Setar Umno chief Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah, and Jerlun Umno chief Datuk Othman Aziz.

During the Umno General Assembly (PAU) in Kuala Lumpur on Friday (Sept 11), Mahdzir stated that he would meet with the Kedah PAS leadership.

At the time, he said Umno had yet to set a date for an official meeting and discussion with PAS.

"I will inform the top Umno leadership at the central level about the informal meeting with the Kedah PAS leadership, and we will plan our next steps accordingly.

"Any decision to be made will be determined at the highest levels of both parties," he added.
