JITRA: A lorry driver carrying a consignment of cement was arrested after testing positive for methamphetamine during an integrated operation targeting drug abuse among commercial vehicle drivers at the Jitra Toll Plaza (southbound) on Tuesday (Sept 15) night.
Kedah Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Stien Van Lutam said the 43-year-old man from Pendang was among six people screened for drugs during the operation.
"The suspect admitted to taking the illicit substance to avoid drowsiness while driving.
"This was also a repeat offence, and we take the matter seriously," he told reporters after the operation here last night.
Stien said the suspect has been charged under Section 3(1) of the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983.
The special operation, which began on July 1, is ongoing to curb drug abuse among commercial vehicle drivers.
Drivers who test positive are referred to the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) for further action, while JPJ may suspend their competent driver’s and vocational licences pending the outcome of the investigation. – Bernama
