Causeway crash: Driver of runaway lorry had 33 prior offences, say cops

JOHOR BARU: The driver of the runaway lorry that rammed into 11 other vehicles on the Causeway here has 33 past traffic records, revealed Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat.

The 34-year-old driver also has another six unpaid summonses for various traffic offences, he said when contacted by the media on Friday (July 8).

He said the driver was arrested at 1.15pm Thursday (July 7), hours after the mishap took place at around 9.25am on the Johor side of the Causeway.

The suspect, wearing a dark-coloured T-shirt and jeans, was handcuffed and brought to the Johor Baru court complex at around 10am on Friday.

Court senior assistant Melody Woon Sze Mun approved the remand order to keep the suspect in police custody for three days to aid in investigations.

It was reported that the suspect, who drove the Singapore-bound tipper lorry loaded with rock dust, lost control of his heavy vehicle and crashed into other vehicles - six of them are Singapore-registered.

The suspect tested negative for drugs when he was arrested, said ACP Raub, adding that nobody was injured in the accident.

The case is investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.

Videos of the incident have been making rounds on social media where one of the clips showed the lorry crashing into multiple cars before coming to a stop at the Causeway.
