Police to question lawyers who joined march

KUALA LUMPUR: The organisers and participants of The Walk For Judicial Independence by the Malaysian Bar will be called in for questioning this week, said the police. Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Noor Dellhan Yahaya confirmed the matter yesterday.

“They will be called in to give their statements. All participants who were present will be called up,” he said.

On Friday, the event ended without any march by lawyers to Parliament as police had prevented them from going ahead.

There was a brief, tense moment when police personnel formed a human chain to stop some lawyers from attempting to leave the area.

A police light strike force unit was called in to provide further security after several lawyers tried to leave the area but were denied.

On Friday, the Malaysian Bar said it was mulling legal action against the police for disallowing the walk to Parliament.

Its president Karen Cheah said under the Peaceful Assembly Act, there was no need for the Bar to get police permission to hold the gathering or march except to give them a notice.
