‘Free-range’ cows a major road hazard

HERDS of cows roaming freely on the main roads in Gua Musang and Pasir Puteh – the gateways to Kelantan – may become deathtraps for drivers, especially during this festive season, Utusan Malaysia reported.

Gua Musang OCPD Supt Sik Choon Foo said a total of 156 cases involving cows were recorded over the past two years, making the animal one of the main causes of road accidents in the district.

On average, he said between two and 15 incidents involving various types of vehicles colliding with cows that were left to roam freely were recorded in a month.

“Cow accidents often occur in Jalan Gua Musang-Kuala Krai near Chiku and Paloh, Jalan Gua Musang-Jeli, Jalan Gua Musang-Kuala Berang and around Felda Aring, Felda Perasu, Kampung Chalil, Lebir, Limau Kasturi and Panggong Lalat,” he added.

The Pasir Puteh district council has increased operations to capture cows prior to Hari Raya Aidilfitri to ensure the entrance to Kelantan is free of such herds.

Council secretary Noor Azman Md Nawi said a warning notice of stern action had been issued to farmers under provisions of the Stray Animals By-Laws 1983 and the 2009 Amendment.

He said these owners could be slapped with a summons not exceeding RM500 for a cow that was confiscated, in addition to the cost of taking care of it, which is RM100 per day.
