PETALING JAYA: Voters in Peninsular Malaysia's southernmost state gave Barisan Nasional a victory at Saturday's election.

Barisan won 40 of the 56 seats contested, with Umno securing 33 seats followed by MCA with 4 seats and MIC winning 3.

The results marked a turnaround for Barisan which lost Johor in the 2018 general election (GE14).

At GE14, Pakatan Harapan swept to victory by winning 36 of the 56 seats in the Johor state assembly.

Voter turnout was however lower this time around.

At GE14, 82.8% of the 1.8 million eligible voters in Johor turned up to cast their ballots.

The figure fell to 53.6% of 2.6 million eligible voters at Saturday's election.

Pakatan Harapan – which comprises PKR, DAP and Amanah, won 12 seats.

Perikatan Nasional won 3 seats, while Muda bagged the remaining 1 constituency in its debut in the polls.

At GE14, Pakatan Harapan won the majority or 36 of the 56 seats in the Johor state assembly, while Barisan Nasional had secured 19 seats and PAS with one seat.

In terms of popular vote, Barisan secured 43% out of the 1,391,162 ballots cast.

Pakatan Harapan received 26%, and other parties with 5.7%.
