Malaysia ranks sixth in global Covid-19 recovery index, says Health DG

PETALING JAYA: With almost two years into the pandemic, Malaysia has been ranked sixth in the global Covid-19 recovery index, says Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

In a tweet on Sunday night (Jan 9), Dr Noor Hisham said the Global Covid Index (GCI) was developed with input from various international bodies and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

He, however, said Malaysia is ranked number 13 in the latest Nikkei Recovery Index, adding that it also highlights a surge of cases, particularly the Omicron variant, in many countries.

He also retweeted an article by Nikkei Asia that the index highlights a divide between Asia and the West, with the United States having a particularly rough time as the Omicron variant drives an explosion in cases.

Malaysia recorded 2,714 recoveries on Sunday (Jan 9), bringing the total number to 2,714,614 cases.

A total of 2,888 new cases were recorded, bringing the country’s cumulative cases to 2,786,219 since the pandemic began in March 2020.

According to the Health Ministry, a total of 2,852 cases of the 2,888 new cases were classified as Category 1 and 2.

Merely 36 cases or 1.2% were classified as Category 3, 4, and 5.
