Explain reason for alcohol sale ban at country club, Melaka govt told

PETALING JAYA: The Melaka state government must explain the rationale behind the ban imposed on the sale of alcoholic beverages at Ayer Keroh Country Club, says DAP assemblyman Kerk Chee Yee.

“I urge the state government to explain the ban, as there was no explanation or information provided by any government spokesperson at the time of writing this statement,” he said in a statement on Thursday (Dec 23).

Kerk, the Ayer Keroh assemblyman, also questioned whether the state government imposed such a ban because of some wrongdoing by the premises’ operator or its customers, including any possible breach of licence conditions.

“If not, what triggered the ban?” he asked.

The state government directed the club on Wednesday (Dec 22) to stop selling alcoholic beverages on the premises.

The announcement was shared by the club operator on its Facebook account.

Kerk said that such a policy would send a wrong signal to all food and beverage business owners in Melaka as well as any potential investors, especially at this point in time when they are struggling to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.
