Floods: Klang Valley folk share their experience on social media

PETALING JAYA: People are taking to social media to show the situation they are facing due to continuous heavy rain in the Klang Valley.

People are posting pictures and videos of flash floods, many of floodwater entering their homes or flooding roads on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Tiktok.

So far, keywords such as “Klang”, “Setia Alam” and “#floods” have hit over 30,000 tweets.

People were also sharing photos of traffic congestion caused by floods.

Twitter user Sofia The First (@sofea_syakira) noted that the flash floods in the districts reflected the local authority’s town planning and irrigation systems.

Banjir (floods) in Shah Alam and Klang really show how bad our town planning and irrigation system is. And how unprepared we can be since we’ve seldom encounter continuous rains like this (sic)” she tweeted.

Another Twitter user Alastiar (@AlastairMinjoot) tweeted, “Klang is all about water problems. It’s either we flooding or we got water shortage (sic).”

Twitter user SimplyySarah (@SimplyySarahVA) shared a series of photographs of areas in Klang inundated by floodwaters, and telling people to stay safe.

“Those in Klang, please drive safe. Be wary. Don’t make stupid decisions,” she tweeted.

Heavy rain started on Friday (Dec 17) and the Meteorological Department has said that it will continue in the Klang Valley throughout Saturday (Dec 18).

“Extreme continuous rain is expected at Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Klang, Gombak, Petaling, Kuala Langat and Hulu Langat as well as Kuala Lumpur,” it said in a nationwide weather warning notice at 2pm Saturday.

Meanwhile, Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis says people in flood-hit areas should limit their movement and stay at home.

He also advised motorists in light vehicles to avoid crossing roads with rising waters and strong currents.
