KUCHING: The private school where a student allegedly injured a teacher will resume classes on Thursday (Oct 22) following clearance from the relevant authorities.
In a statement on Wednesday (Oct 21) evening, the school said the teacher did not sustain critical injuries and is recovering well.
It also said the student involved is in police custody and is no longer an active student.
"The matter remains under police investigation and the school will continue to cooperate fully with the relevant authorities," the statement said.
The school had closed early on Wednesday (Oct 21) as a precaution upon police advice following the incident in the morning.
The school also said it had reviewed its safety protocols and enhanced security measures in consultation with the relevant authorities following the incident.
It said three ancillary police officers will be stationed at the school compound and appropriate safety checks conducted upon entry.
"The school is also exploring more comprehensive, long-term security measures for the campus," it said, adding that counselling support will be provided for students who need it.
Separately, the state Education Department said it had contacted the school and is ready to offer psychosocial support to students, teachers and staff.
The department also urged the public not to speculate or spread unverified information on the incident or share content that may jeopardise the privacy and welfare of the individual concerned.
In the incident, the teacher was reportedly injured while attempting to confiscate a sharp object from the student.
Police received an emergency call at 8.03am informing them that the student had brought firecrackers to the school and injured a female teacher.
The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon and Section 6(1) of the Explosives Act 1957.
