PETALING JAYA: The government will expand the existing food basket initiative by allocating a total of RM300,000 for each lawmaker - including from the Opposition - says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
In his special address Monday (June 28), the Prime Minister said the government realised the importance of having basic necessities, especially for those who are truly affected.
"In terms of extending help to the rakyat, I will take the attitude of not considering any political affiliations. Be it government or opposition MPs, everyone must shoulder the responsibility to help the people at a time when many are in need,” said Muhyiddin.
"Use this allocation wisely to help needy people in every constituency," he added when unveiling the RM150bil Pemulih aid package on Monday (June 28)
Muhyiddin also said that an additional RM10mil had also been allocated by the government for a special food basket programme for the Orang Asli community.
He also said that the government will implement a price control programme for cooking oil based on the threshold price for crude palm oil.
Muhyiddin said it was a part of the government's initial plans to tackle the increase in the price of bottled cooking oil between 1kg and 5kg.
"The government is committed to helping the public lower their cost of living. We will continue with the price control policy for essential goods despite the increase in global commodity prices," he said.
"Through this programme, for example, the price for a 5kg bottle of cooking oil can be controlled to not exceed RM30," added Muhyiddin.
Aside from that, the government will maintain the retail price for RON95 petrol, diesel, and LPG, which is expected to involve a subsidy worth RM6bil this year.
