Fire razes six double-storey wooden houses in Sibu, 20 left homeless

SIBU: It will be a bleak Gawai celebration for 20 people when six double-storey wooden houses in Lane 1, Jalan Tiong Hua were destroyed in a fire on Thursday (May 13).

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 4 chief Janggan Muling said nothing could be salvaged in the 5am incident.

He added that the 20 occupants from six families, however, managed to escape to safety before firemen arrived at the scene.

"The families were tenants of the houses. They are now temporarily putting up with their relatives," he said.

They are from the outskirts of the town and had moved here to work.

This is the second fire in the area this year.

The first one happened on March 29 where 11 families were made homeless when their wooden houses were razed to the ground.

One of the occupants was burnt to death.
