KUALA LUMPUR: Border authorities and exit checkpoints have been put on alert in case alleged Macau scam ringleader Datuk Seri Nicky Liow Soon Hee tries to flee the country.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador said on Wednesday (March 31) that police have placed Liow on the wanted list.
"Once his name is on the wanted list, all border checkpoints, jetties, ports and airports are automatically notified," he said.
It was reported that police have arrested 68 members linked to Liow, including two Datuk Seri and six Datuk.
In a press conference here yesterday Abdul Hamid said Liow, who has been linked to Macau scam syndicate operations here, was believed to have at least 34 law enforcement agency personnel on his payroll, including a former deputy public prosecutor who acted as a fixer for the syndicate.
Police began massive operations to cripple the syndicate after receiving a report on the bogus sale of a cellphone worth RM1,500 in Pontian, Johor.
Liow was last seen on March 20 at Setiawalk in Puchong, where the syndicate reportedly ran its operations out of 48 apartments.
Johor police chief Comm Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay was quoted as saying they received information that he packed eight bags with cash and fled.
Investigations revealed that Liow controlled the CCTV network at Setiawalk, and might have also had a secret escape route there.
